LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A man was sentenced on Monday for a DUI crash that killed his best friend in February.
A judge ordered John Koerner to serve six months in a corrections work release program, complete 100 hours of community service and spend 12 years on probation.
Prosecutors said Koerner was driving drunk early on the morning of February 11 when he lost control and hit a tree in the 2400 block of Grinstead Drive. He and a passenger, Kristy Harper, ran from the scene of the crash which killed a second passenger, Jacob Mower, 33, of Clarksville, IN. Police captured Koerner and Harper a short time later.
Koerner took a plea deal and was sentenced on Monday after testifying in his own defense. "(Mower) was just a big part of my life," Koerner said on the stand. "He was my best friend, and I will never get that back. He was like my brother. He was part of my family."
Mower suffered a severe brain injury and died four days after the crash.
