LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Louisville Police Chief Steve Conrad pitched his idea to help stop the violence in Louisville to the Metro Council Thursday afternoon.

The chief's new VIPER unit specifically targets violent crime, the places is happens most and the well-known bad guys.

"VIPER's efforts will be tactical, they'll be surgical in that we're trying to go after the people that are truly causing us the problem," said Chief Conrad. "It's not just somebody that's causing a problem on the street. It's somebody that's causing problems on the street every day, somebody that's committing those crimes every day."

The VIPER unit will consist of 25 detectives, 5 sergeants and a lieutenant.
