Defeating the odds, a 9-month old Spartanburg infant continues to fight for her life after deputies said she was brutally shaken by her father.
In August, baby Cheyenne Rae's mother said doctors told her the prognosis wasn't good. Her baby wasn't expected to live though the weekend. In what some call a miracle, the baby beat those odds and survived.
She continued to improve under the care of doctors for about 30 days at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Her mother Amy Owensby stayed by her side and updated supporters every day with pictures and video, posting them on Facebook.
This week the news was very good, after countless surgeries and sleepless nights baby Cheyenne and her mother finally were able to return home Monday night. It is a milestone the family only prayed would one day be possible.
"She's a miracle, a miracle baby," said Cheyenne's grandfather, Danny Owensby.
Cheyenne is the youngest of Danny Owensby's three grandchildren. FOX Carolina spoke to him right after he got the chance to see the child at home. He said it was hard to keep his emotions inside, finally seeing her smile again.
"I sat down and talked to her, she giggled and smiled," Owensby said. "She had just got home from the doctor, they said she has improved greatly. Every day she gets better and better."
But the road to recovery hasn't been easy, the family said doctors aren't sure what the future holds, the girl continues to battle swelling of the brain and is on a feeding tube. Her grandfather said it's hard to watch her pain, knowing what allegedly put her there in the first place.
"Every time you would walk in the room at the hospital, you'd get mad and madder and try to keep your head," Owensby said.
Cheyenne's father, James Davis Jr., 28, remains behind bars at the Spartanburg County Jail. He was charged with child abuse causing great injury.
Several fundraisers have been held to raise money for Cheyenne's medical expenses. In August, dozens came out to an event at the Fuddruckers in Spartanburg.
The Facebook page "Prayers for Cheyenne Rae" has more than 73,000 fans.
On Friday Sept. 21, there will be a car wash fundraiser at 570 Washington St. in Greenville from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
