SHELBYVILLE, KY (WAVE) - More than 100 years of business comes to an end over the weekend as Smith McKenney Pharmacy closes up shop and the space reopens under a nationwide name.
CVS Pharmacy will take over operations of the Shelbyville location as well as a Smith McKenney location in Simpsonville.
Unlike other corporate buyouts and takeovers, loyal customers are being told their friends behind the counter will remain.
Deliveries and in-house charge accounts will stay with the store. That promise came from Pharmacy Manager Angela Parrett who's been filling prescriptions at the Smith-McKenney Shelbyville location for ten years.
"It's still going to be the same employees, still going to be in the same location and provide the same services," Parrett said.
The closure of the small town pharmacy has been a tough pill to swallow for locals.
"It's like the death of a family member," James Mulcahy said.
Alissa Barker tried to be optimistic. "I'm hoping the same atmosphere sticks around here. I'll try out the new owners, but it's the personal pharmacists and employees that keep me coming back," Barker said.
Smith-McKenney opened the company's first store in downtown Shelbyville in the early 1900's.
In recent years, the company operated a store in a shopping center.
The Smith McKenney location will close Friday evening. "This weekend they'll come in and do re-shelving, re-stocking. New computers, new system. We'll reopen Monday morning as normal under new owners, a new CVS store," Parrett said.
A CVS corporate spokesperson could not be reached for comment.
