TBI Most Wanted suspect slips away from police

CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A man wanted by police for the last four months managed to slip away from authorities on Thursday.

Danyon Lydell Dowlen is being sought for questioning in the death of Charles Sims on Sept. 18.

On Thursday, Dowlen was spotted by a Clarksville officer in front of a residence on Sampson Street.   When Dowlen saw the officer, he walked inside of the residence.  Additional police were called to the scene, but when they entered the residence, Dowlen was not there.

Background on case

Before the shooting death in September, Dowlen already has a warrant on file for the charge of felon in possession of a firearm and should be considered armed and dangerous, police said.

Officers said an eyewitness told them that Dowlen and Sims were in a gun fight previous to the time Sims was found with several gunshot wounds in the area of Reynolds and Dodd Street.

While police processed the crime scene, several shell casings and a handgun were found, which corroborated the statement of eyewitnesses.

Police have also seized a vehicle that was driven by Dowlen at the time of the incident.

Officers said Dowlen's criminal history included several felonies.

Detectives said the confrontation between Sims and Dowlen stemmed from the fact that Sims had a relationship with the mother of Dowlen's child. According to police, several residents in the area said Dowlen had previously assaulted Sims, but it was never reported to police.

Anyone with information on Dowlen's whereabouts can call 911 or the police TIPSLINE at 931-645-8477.
