LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - There was panic and confusion for a number of parents as they rushed to Kosair Children's Hospital to find their children after the accident that caused JCPS bus 1250 to roll over.
Distraught parents waiting at Kosair Children's for news about their children found out they were in the wrong place.
"My daughter left a message. She just said the bus turned over, and she said, "Hurry up and get here." Her face was cut up," said parent Felicia Lyons, whose daughter and son were both riding JCPS bus 1250 when it rolled over at Lower River Road and Moorman Road.
Lyons assumed both of her children would be rushed to Kosair Children's Hospital in downtown Louisville. She was not alone in making that assumption.
"I immediately started crying, shaking, hysterical," said Cherise Jones, who also showed up at Kosair Children's after getting a frantic call from her daughter.
As the ambulances screamed outside the emergency room, the crowd of parents outside grew. They were desperate for information and emotional and agitated when they didn't immediately get it.
"Somebody on the scene said she was bleeding," said one animated parent who would not give her name. "And then I called the school, the school is busy, and I called the compound and they don't know where they are."
Cherise Jones added, "Right now I don't know where my child is."
Jones and others would soon find out the majority of the children were not at Kosair Children's Hospital. Only six of the students -- the ones most seriously hurt -- were initially brought to that hospital with fractures and head and abdominal injuries. Staff members worked to spread information about the students they were treating as quickly as possible.
"Literally, as they are coming in the door we're typing it into the computer system," said Cis Gruebbel, chief nursing officer at Kosair Children's. "So as the families are coming in, we are able to match them up immediately."
But it wasn't fast enough for parents like Felica Lyons. She and her husband eventually found out that not only were their kids not at Kosair Children's, the brother and sister were taken to separate hospitals, adding more stress to an already impossible day.
The six students at Kosair Children's Hospital were admitted. They range in age from 12 to 15 and are expected to recover. A seventh student brought to Kosair Children's after initially being treated at another hospital already has been released.
