LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A man
police said tried to steal a vehicle was caught by someone other than officers.
According to an arrest
report, Ricky Poppe stole a GMC Denali out of a garage of a home on Carolina
Avenue on September 28.
When Poppe broke into the
garage he set off a home alarm, waking up the owners.
The homeowner hopping into
another one of his vehicles and was able to block off Poppe at a gas station
off of Newburg Road. Poppe got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. The
homeowner was able to catch him and the two were involved in a physical
altercation. The homeowner held Poppe until police arrived.
Poppe was transferred to
University Hospital where police obtained a warrant to search his personal
property brought into the hospital with him.
In his belongings police
found 18 one hundred dollar bills, which police tracked to a previous victim whose
vehicle was broken into, and the purse of a woman who had also filed a
complaint of a vehicle theft.
Poppe is charged with
theft by unlawful taking from auto and burglary.
