Churchill Downs President Kevin Flanery and Dana Johnson, Director of Community Relations discussed how Churchill Downs supports the community. They support many community agencies, issues and projects.
One of the most important is the Churchill Downs Governor's Scholars Program, a unique partnership between the track and the Kentucky Governor's Scholars Program. Churchill Downs annually funds the participation in the overall Kentucky Governor's Scholars Program by one student in each of the legislative districts in Jefferson County. Each student participating in the Churchill Downs Governor's Scholars program has overcome a hardship, challenge or health issue to become a high achiever in the classroom. Without the program, which ensures participation by 28 students each year, many of those students might not be able to participate in the overall Governor's Scholars program.
Along with direct financial support of public and private agencies and causes, Churchill Downs supports community organizations and events by allowing the use of the historic track's facilities and its nearly 150 acres. This "in-kind" support is an important way for Churchill Downs to give back to the community. One major example of this "in-kind" support is the Kentuckiana Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's annual "Greater Louisville Walk to Cure Diabetes," which has been held at Churchill Downs for the last three years. More than 9,000 walkers – a record – participated in the walk through the grounds of Churchill Downs and raised more than $800,000 for diabetes research.
