LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The southern Indiana mother who gained national attention as a symbol of determination and recovery after the March 2 tornadoes was honored in Louisville Wednesday.

The Kentucky Broadcasters Association presented Stephanie Decker the Distinguished Kentuckian Award.

Decker lost parts of both of her legs as she shielded her children as the storm tore apart their rural Henryville home.

"There is nothing more that I wanted that day than to step up on march second.  I wanted to be there. I wanted to be the one that put it on the line for my kids," Decker said during the event.

The 37-year-old is now walking again with the help of prosthetic legs.

Decker is a native of Frankfort, Kentucky.
