LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A woman has died and a man is hospitalized after they were both struck by a vehicle on a bridge.

According to Louisville metro Police Spokesperson Alicia Smiley, police were dispatched around 7:30 p.m. Thursday after reports a person had been hit on Interstate 64 West on the Sherman Minton Bridge.

Police said the man and woman were driving westbound in I-64 when their car stalled. While they were trying to put fuel in the car a driver in a Chevy Malibu stuck the couple.

The woman was transported to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The man was also transported to the hospital. He was reported as being conscious and alert. His injuries are considered non-life threatening.

The driver of the Malibu was the only passenger in the car. Police said the driver was not injured and it appeared they did not see the couple on the bridge. No charges have been filed at this time.

Traffic is being routed off of the bridge. The bridge is expected to temporally close due to emergency response vehicles.

We have a crew on the way to the scene and will bring you more information on this breaking story as it develops on WAVE 3, online at wave3.com and on your mobile device with the WAVE 3 mobile app.
