ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) – Three young children are removed from a Hardin County home and their parents are arrested after investigators discovered they were living in filthy and dangerous conditions.
Around 11:30 Wednesday night, Kentucky State Police were called to Berea Road in Elizabethtown in hopes of talking a woman out of taking her own life.
"A few minutes later, they actually came out, the husband and the wife and she didn't have a gun, so there was no further incident as far as that was concerned, but we also knew that there were children in the home," said Master Trooper Norman Chaffins, Kentucky State Police.
Troopers had no idea what they were about to find. "It was filth, it was old food, garbage bags and the troopers that were there started to get physically ill while they were actually in the home and if that happened to some grown men, you can imagine what that was doing to the children," said Chaffins.
Police say Christopher and Jennifer Hart were living in deplorable conditions and their three children ages 8 months to 8 years old were in danger.
"They discovered weapons in the home," said Chaffins. "They were within arm's reach of the children, children had access to those weapons and they were loaded."
It was news neighbors were shocked to hear. "Yes that is sad," said Minnie Williams, who lives nearby. "Real sad."
Multiple people were back at home on Thursday and when we stopped by Christopher Hart answered the door, but asked us to leave.
"The conditions that were there, I mean they are conditions that could have been easily taken care of, but they just neglected to do it," said Chaffins.
