Floyd Memorial Hospital
Floyd Memorial Hospital now has Linear accelerator with Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) capabilities. This will reduce treatment times by 90%. For example, a patient with lung cancer that would have required 30 treatments, 5 days a week for 6 weeks under traditional radiation therapy would only need 4 treatments in one week with SBRT. They will also have less damage to surrounding healthy tissues because the beam of radiation is so precise to the cancerous area, and fewer side effects. In addition, it's much easier for people to tolerate because it's less of an interruption to their life, especially for patients who live in rural areas that are a long drive from the cancer center.
SBRT was previously only available in Louisville, so this is the first time it's available in Southern Indiana-making it easily accessible for Southern Indiana patients.
