WAVE 3 Editorial – October 9, 2012: Reprehensible Ad
By Ken Selvaggi WAVE 3 Vice President and General Manager
Running for President assumes a responsibility that one candidate is ignoring.
Randall Terry is a presidential candidate that many have not heard from or seen in the campaign. That will change in Louisville with an ad that will run in our 5 p.m. newscast Wednesday.
Terry is advocating a no vote for the current President. And that is certainly his right. But you wouldn't know it by the ad, at least not until the last few seconds of the spot. Up to that point, you will likely be disgusted and it won't be because of your political leaning.
Terry founded the pro-life organization Operation Rescue. His candidacy for President is about getting anti-abortion ads on television. Again, that is certainly his right. But this ad can hardly be considered pro-life in any shape or form.
It is a reprehensible ad and we have to run it by law since Terry is a presidential candidate. He is taking advantage of the law. The law makes sense to prevent stations from censoring ads but it may be time to fine tune the law since clearly not everyone running for the highest office in the land takes that responsibility seriously enough.
