LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Crews are on the scene after a child was hit by a Jefferson County Public School bus.

According to Louisville Metro police, at 3:50 p.m.  JCPS bus  number 1103 was traveling westbound in the 2800 block of Rockford Lane, near Teaneck Lane, when the bus struck a 10-year-old child.

Police said the bus, which is a special needs bus, had just dropped off a child from Wellington Elementary School when for an unknown reason the same child ran out in front of the bus.

The bus was reported to be traveling at a low rate of speed and the driver stopped as soon as the child was hit.

The bus had four students on board at the time the child was hit. Another JCPS bus was called to the scene to pick up the remaining children and transport them to their homes.

The child was transported to Kosair Children's Hospital with what is considered to be non-life threatening injuries. Police said the child may have some broken bones.

According to JCPS Spokesperson Ben Jackey, the driver of the bus will be placed on paid administrative leave until an investigation between LMPD and JCPS transportation officials has been completed. After the investigation is completed a JCPS review board will make a final decision concerning the bus driver.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
