LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad addressed a crowd about his two hot button issues, fighting crime and maintaining trust.

On Thursday, Chief Conrad told WAVE 3 it is issues such as car break-ins and burglaries that seem to dominate the runs his officers make.

Crime scenes and murders seem to have dominated the news lately and a new special unit called Viper is aiming to take back the streets,

Conrad explained, "It's not necessarily undercover work. Officers will in some cases will be wearing uniforms and in some cases will be wearing plain clothes. It will involve sometimes doing surveillance and at other times doing high profile efforts in neighborhoods."

The goal is take guns and the repeat criminals off the streets.

The unit has been in place for less than a month, but neighbors said they have noticed a difference.

LMPD is also trying to get a handle on crime in the fifth division.

Major Mark Fox spoke about the recent rise in theft in the area.

If you see anything suspicious in your area you are asked to call police at (502) 574-LMPD.
