LOUISIVLLE, KY (WAVE) – February is American Heart Awareness Month. Doctors with the University of Louisville want to make you aware of the symptoms of heart attack and stroke for both men and women. Heart disease is the leading cause for both men and women, accounting for about 600,000 deaths each year according to the CDC.

Symptoms of Heart Attack & Stroke
Heart Attack
· Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck or back
· Feeling weak, light-headed or faint
· Chest pain or discomfort
· Pain or discomfort in arms or shoulder
· Shortness of breath

Stroke
· Sudden onset of weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg
· Sudden severe headache with no known cause
· Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
· Sudden trouble seeing in one eye or both
· Sudden unexplained dizziness or imbalance

Preventing Heart Disease & Stroke:
· Eat a healthy diet
· Maintain a healthy weight
· Exercise regularly
· Monitor blood pressure
· Don't smoke
· Limit alcohol use
· Have cholesterol checked
· Manage diabetes
