VINE GROVE, KY (WAVE) – A Hardin County convenience store employee was shot Saturday morning, and the search is on for the gunman, according to Kentucky State Police. But the store's manager tells a different story.

Norman Chaffins, Public Affairs Officer for KSP, said Post 4 in Elizabethtown received a call at 8:12 a.m. Saturday about shots fired near the 16000 block of Rineyville-Big Springs Road in the Big Springs community of Hardin County.

"At the convenience store, there was an altercation between the suspect and an employee at the convenience store," said Chaffins. "There was a struggle over a weapon and the employee was shot in the arm."

Near the same time and location, Chaffins said Post 4 received a call from a man stating that a gunman came to his door, pointed the weapon in his face and demanded the keys to his car. Chaffins said the victim complied and the suspect drove off.

"The two separate phone calls that we received from the citizen that had the gun pointed at him and the incident at the convenience store probably are related," Chaffins said.

KSP's preliminary investigation revealed that the gunshots came from Carolyn's Corner Store in Big Springs. Chaffins said a man entered the store in an attempt to rob it. An employee struggled with the suspect over the gun that he displayed, the gun discharged and the store employee was shot in the arm. The gunman got away.

Police later said an employee was shot, not at the store, but at a nearby home. But the manager of Carolyn's Corner said that after the suspect tried to rob Carolyn, the owner, she told the suspect she lived across the street and would give the suspect money and car keys when she was really trying to get help.

The manager said a neighbor answered the door and in a scuffle, the suspect got ahold of the neighbor's gun and shot the neighbor in the arm. The manager said the suspect held another neighbor at gunpoint, stealing that person's car and getting away.

The gunshot victim was rushed to Hardin Memorial Hospital where he was treated and then transported to University of Louisville Hospital where he was listed in serious but stable condition Saturday night.

Police describe the gunman as a white man wearing dark clothing. Police said the gunman may have driven away in a stolen dark blue 1998 Buick LeSabre in an unknown direction. The investigation is ongoing.
