FLOYD COUNTY, IN (WAVE) - Four people were killed and another hurt in a violent crash between a taxi and a Cadillac early Monday morning in Floyd County.

The accident happened just after midnight on SR111 near Seven Mile Lane.

Police said driver of the southbound taxi lost control, overcorrected, crossed the center line and slammed head-on into the Cadillac. Investigators initially said the driver of the Cadillac was at fault but that was not the case.

The cab caught fire. Witnesses said the taxi driver got out of the vehicle and walked a short distance before collapsing.

"Right after impact, he was able to free himself, got out of his vehicle and went a short distance, according to some witnesses," Floyd County Sheriff Darrell Mills said "He is conscious, but he's very serious."

The cab's three passengers were not able to get out of the car. Police believe they died in the fire.

The driver of the Cadillac died while being flown to University of Louisville Hospital.

The cab driver is at UofL Hospital in serious condition.
