CARROLL COUNTY, KY (WAVE) – Two children are dead and others were injured after a school bus crashed and rolled over in Carroll County.

According to Kentucky State Police Trooper Brad Arterburn, nine children and two adults were on board bus number 140 when it crashed at 3258 Boone Road at 4:32 p.m. on Monday.

Two children were pronounced dead at the scene, three were transported to Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville where they are expecting a fourth.

One child was transported to UK Medical Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky; an additional three children were released to their parents after the crash.

The adult assistant on the bus was transported to a hospital. The driver was uninjured.

Kosair released they are treating children for broken bones and head injuries. No additional information on injuries had been released at this time.

The bus was on the way to drop children off after their head start program. The bus was equipped with seatbelts, and police said it appears all the children were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Accident reconstruction crews spent hours trying to piece together what happened and why.
Police said the believe the bus veered off the road, partially over turned and then slammed into a tree.

While investigators are looking into the cause, they aren't ruling out the make-up of the road. "It's a small country road and narrow with no lines and no center line and right now we don't know why the bus lost control," said Arterburn.
