BULLITT COUNTY, KY (WAVE) – Many parents
in Bullitt County said their Halloween took a scary turn after they saw a crawl
on their television screen about Nichols Elementary.
Nichols is the closest Bullitt County
School to the site where a train that derailed caught fire. The school district
announced a "shelter in place" status as a precaution, but a while later the
district decided to dismiss students.
A few parents who went to the school
were not happy when they saw their children getting on a school bus and
wondered why they were not sent home early.
Parent Kelly Schulten said, "I thought
they were going to evacuate them. When there's a scare like that what are you
going to do?"
Principal Sheri Hamilton explained, "We
really did have a great day until this afternoon, but everything went smoothly.
Parents checked out kids as needed and we were fine."
Hamilton said while parents worried,
the students were mostly excited about Halloween and never missed a beat at
school.
