AAA vehicle involved in deadly I-71 wreck

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A service vehicle for AAA Kentucky was one of two trucks involved in a deadly crash Wednesday morning on Interstate 71 is caused traffic backups for drivers heading out of downtown Louisville.

According to Louisville Metro Police, the crash happened at mile marker 7 northbound and was reported at 6:07 a.m. Officers said the driver of a AAA Rescue Ranger vehicle appears to have lost control and struck the cable barrier before it rolled over and was hit by a pickup truck.

The driver of the Rescue Ranger vehicle was killed in the accident. The driver of the second car was taken to University Hospital with injuries said to be non-life threatening.

Until the accident scene is cleared northbound traffic on I-71 is being diverted at the Watterson Expressway split. I-71 north is not expected to reopened until 11 a.m. at the earliest.

One of the detours in place is to exit the Watterson at US 42 and take US 42 to the Gene Snyder Freeway (KY 841/I-265). Once on the Snyder, drivers will be able to get back onto I-71 north.

Another possible detour is to continue west on the Watterson to the Westport Road exit. Drivers can turn left onto Westport Road and use the Gene Snyder Freeway (I-265) to rejoin I-71 north.
