LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) –A body has been discovered in the aftermath of a fire at an apartment complex during a SWAT situation.
Louisville Metro Police SWAT team were called after a man fired on officers Wednesday in the Phoenix Hill neighborhood. The suspect had barricaded himself inside the building in the 400 block of South Campbell, according to LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell. Members of the LMPD VIPER unit were attempting to serve a warrant on the man, who police said has a violent history.
The Louisville Fire Department responded when the building caught fire. Crews were able to get the fire under control at 3:17 p.m.
Mitchell said officers had been given permission to search the property, located in an apartment complex between East Liberty Street and East Muhammad Ali Boulevard, when the shots were fired.
Several streets in the area have been blocked and traffic is being diverted. As a result, Jefferson County Public Schools cannot transport students to the area. Instead, JCPS high school and middle school students will be taken to Meyzeek Middle School at 828 S. Jackson Street.
