Chimney fire at rural Oldham County home brings extra alarms

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – An extra alarm house fire in Oldham County has been brought under control.

The fire in the 5300 block of Old Highway 53 outside of La Grange was reported around 4:30 a.m. and was originally dispatched as a four-alarm fire.

Firefighters tell WAVE 3 News the fire was discovered when one of the residents awoke to their alarm clock, noticed smoke and saw a seam of fire on the ceiling. Shortly after that, smoke detectors in the home went off and the residents called 911.

According to dispatchers, the alarm status was because home involved is in a rural area and water trucks had to be called to the scene. Once fire crews got to the scene, the status was downgraded to a two-alarm fire.

The fire was in the chimney and spread to the attic. Firefighters were quickly able to get it under control and contain it to the attic.

Both people in the home got out safety and no injuries are reported.

Fire officials said everyone should get their chimney inspected and cleaned before using it.
