Friday night, there is an active warrant for a Hancock County teacher facing dozens of child pornography charges.

A Daviess County Grand Jury indicted 42-year-old Daniel Scott Neal on 39 counts this week.

Officials tell us they seized the images relating to the charges back in May.

The question is: Why was Neal allowed to keep teaching while under investigation for such a crime?

Those who know Daniel Scott Neal say they're shocked by the charges that he's facing.

Shock and disbelief is how Superintendent Kyle Estes says staffers are reacting to the claims made against Neal.

"A lot of shocked looks, and that's kind of what I've seen from other administrations and other teachers as well," Estes told 14 News.

Neal is an English Teacher at Hancock County High School and also coaches track and cross country.

Estes says he didn't know about the investigation, that started in May, or the possibility that one of his teachers could be in legal trouble until Neal called him Thursday.

"Mr. Neal has been informed that he cannot be on school grounds," said Estes. "He cannot have any contact with students and he has been, his privileges have been revoked as a teacher at this point."

Neal has currently been suspended with pay, which is board policy.

"It is a short-term suspension on the board's part to allow us time to do an investigation and make a decision on his future with the Hancock County School System."

The Commonwealth Attorney's office says until a case is made against a suspect, the investigation isn't revealed, which is why the school district didn't know about Neal's situation.

Now that they do know, Estes says the attention will remain on what's most important, students.

"They're first," he said. "We put kids first here and that's where our focus is. We want them to be able to deal with this, process this, and still be able to regain their focus."

The school district is also offering counseling to students who feel that they need help during this time.
