ASU group calling for action in Gaza

TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

An Arizona State University group is calling for action against Israel's military operation in Gaza.

"It goes deep down in my heart. It's my family, it's my people," said Lina Bearat.

Bearat said she grew up in the Valley and graduated from ASU as a civil engineer and has many family members in the region.

"We are here to educate people, students, faculty, community members and just tell the American people, it's a two-sided issue," she said.

Bearat is active with the ASU group called Students for Justice in Palestine. That group gathered nearly 200 people on the streets of Tempe Friday at 5 p.m. to march. They made signs and chanted things like, "Free, free, Palestine" and "Palestine will never die."

Bearat said they did this in response to the escalating confrontation between Israel and Gaza's Hamas rulers.

"We were protesting to demand that Israel stops its aggression towards the Palestinian people," she said.

Bearat was one of the loudest voices at the march and said she hopes the violence will end soon.

"Every day we watch the news. We hope and we pray that it's just going to stop," said Bearat.

The group is planning another march this Friday in Tempe at 5 p.m.
