Savings can be found on Small Business Saturday

The Saturday after Thanksgiving has become known as Small Business Saturday or Shop Local Saturday. The Saturday after Thanksgiving has become known as Small Business Saturday or Shop Local Saturday.

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - There's a ton of savings talk surrounding Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but don't forget there are also big savings on Saturday.

Small Business Saturday is back this year and growing. For the third year in a row, American Express is offering a $25 credit on your bill when you spend $25 at a local retail store on November 24. You do need to register your card to get the savings.

Above that, however, there's a local push with incentives to shop local throughout the holiday season. The Louisville Independent Business Alliance, with more than 500 members, is offering a contest called Shift Your Shopping Holiday Passport.

"Visit any five LIBA member businesses, get entered to win and you can win a $1,000 shopping spree," said Summer Auerbach, president of LIBA.

Auerbach said you don't have to shop big box stores to find great savings. It's true. A quick trip around Louisville finds all kinds of savings and not just on Shop Local Saturday.

At JB & Me, so-called flash sales are getting early shoppers into the store. For example, the store is offering a 20% savings on items like Christmas PJs and shoes.

"Absolutely it's a way to drive in customers" said Greg Jones, the owner of JB & Me. "Most people won't shop unless there's a deal, so we're trying to offer as much of a deal as we can, as often as we can."

At Playthings Toy Shoppe, there are specials planned specifically for Small Business Saturday, like 10% off the popular Playmobil sets. Owner Kristen Dolle knows it will attract shoppers. "Especially people that are looking for Playmobil, we offer a really big selection of it," said Dolle. "You know, that stuff doesn't go on sale very often."

If you're shopping for someone out of the toy section, Regalo Gifts on Barrett is a favorite gift shop. Owner J.D. Dotson said Louisville is great at shopping local year-round. He said that as a way of competing and also to thank customers for being loyal, he's offering 15% off purchases through the end of November. All you have to do is click "Like" on the Regalo Gifts Facebook page.

"If you are not on Facebook," Dotson said, "come in, tell us you like us and we'll give you 15% off."
