Cigarette tax proposed, mayor in favor

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Mayor Greg Fischer hopes a proposed tax on cigarettes will help to Metro.

The Blue Ribbon Commission on tax reform wants to increase the cigarette tax to $1 a pack from the current 60 cents.

Mayor Fischer hops part of the proposed revenue would be allocated at the local level to help Metro smokers kick the habit.

Mayor Fischer explained, "The monies that come out of that I'd like to see used toward education, as it relates to public health and healthier living."

If lawmakers approve the tax it would be the second increase since 2009, when the tax was doubled from 30 cents a pack.
