LG&E, KU Energy rates expected to increase

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Be prepared to pay about $5 more to heat your home. Gas and electric rates are expected to go up if a state commission approves a proposed LG&E and KU Energy rate increase.

Customers had a chance to provide criticism, feedback or ask questions Tuesday evening during a public forum at Louisville Male High School.

The Kentucky Public Service Commission hosted the public meeting. The state entity is charged with approving the increases.

LG&E's natural gas rates will increase 7.3 percent, which is approximately the same as the utility proposed. Most residential customers will see their bill fluctuate $3.53 per month, according to LG&E V.P. Of Communications Chris Whalen.

LG&E's electric customers will experience a $4.31 per month increase, or about 4.8 percent.

The Kentucky Attorney General's office worked with eight agencies to negotiate an agreement.

If approved, the rate increases would take effect January 1, 2013.
