PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix police said a 3-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital after being run over by an SUV.

It happened at about 11 a.m. Sunday at a home in the area of 43rd Avenue and Cactus Road.

Investigators said a mom and her four children were hanging Christmas lights and an SUV parked the driveway was in the way of the ladder and needed to be moved.

We're told by an officer on scene that a 10-year-old boy was in the driver's seat while the mother stood in the open doorway talking to the child about how the car worked.

The car was running, according to police, and then it started to move backward.

The mother was knocked down and then a 3-year-old boy was run over, according to investigators, who said the child had some injuries to his midsection.

A neighbor called 911.

"He was moving around and had like a bloody nose or whatever, and she was screaming, 'Call 911,' and my dad picked up the phone and called 911, and then by the time he turned around she had already run back out and over to her car," said Jim Skousen.

Police said they are investigating, but it was most likely a bad accident.

The child is expected to survive.
