A 42-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly overdosing on his prescription medication and then causing a crash that killed a 13-year-old.
Police said John Morken, of Phoenix, was driving a stolen car and speeding down Interstate 10 near milepost 74 Saturday when he hit an SUV from behind, causing the driver of the Suburban to lose control and crash into the median. Police said the vehicle rolled several times and all four children inside were thrown from the vehicle.
A 13-year-old in the vehicle died. He has been identified as Edgar Velasquez. A 12-year-old and a 5-year-old had serious head trauma and internal injuries. Two adults and an infant in the Suburban had minor injuries. All the victims are from Riverside, CA.
Police said Morken had erratic behavior in the helicopter on the way to the hospital. Morken refused medical treatment at the hospital and was placed into investigative detention.
Investigators found a bottle of prescription pills, Lorazapam, in the passenger compartment of Morken's vehicle. The prescription was filled the day of the crash with 25 pills and only 11 were left in it.
He admitted to taking three pills and then said he took "hundreds" of pills, according to the police report.
Police said Morken also admitted to being at fault in the collision.
Morken was arrested on one count of second-degree murder, three counts of endangerment, two counts of aggravated assault, and one count of aggravated criminal damage.
