BLOOMINGTON - A southern Indiana woman has pleaded guilty to neglect
charges in the starvation death of her 25-year-old disabled daughter six
years ago.
54-year-old Dorothy Axsom of Bloomington was first charged with
murder when she was arrested last year, but prosecutors dropped that
charge in court Tuesday as part of a plea agreement.
Monroe County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Bob Miller says the initial
belief of investigators that Axsom intentionally starved her daughter
couldn't be proved.
Miller says Casey Axsom was taking a prescription drug for her
epilepsy that can result in rapid weight loss. Authorities say Casey
Axsom was bedridden and weighed just 50 pounds when she died in 2006.
A judge sentenced Dorothy Axsom to six years in prison on the felony neglect charge.
