HENRY COUNTY, IN (WAVE) - A Pennsylvania couple accused of putting five of their seven children in the back of a rental truck during a cross-country drive has been formally arraigned on neglect charges.

David Detjen, 41, and his wife Rebecca Detjen, 40, pleaded not guilty. The Detjens were arrested Wednesday in New Castle, IN and jailed on a $10,000 bond.

The arrests happened after police found the couple's 18-year-old daughter, four minor children and 18 cats in the box-filled back of a rented moving truck.

David Detjen told police he is unemployed and was moving his family to California in hopes of finding work. Police said Detjen told them he knew that putting his children in the back of the truck was wrong but that he did it as a last resort.
