CAMPBELLSBURG, KY (WAVE) – A semi driver is dead after his rig went off the roadway, crashing into a bridge overpass before landing on the road below.
According to Kentucky State Police in Campbellsburg, the crash happened at 8:30 a.m. on Interstate 71 in Gallatin County at the 63 mile marker. State police say the rig was heading southbound when it veered off the road and hit the end of the overpass. The impact left the trailer in the middle of the interstate and sent the cab onto the roadway below.
The driver, Johnny Sherard, 54, of Anderson, SC, was partially ejected from the tractor and died in the crash. State police said Sherard was not wearing a seatbelt.
KSP said the investigation is ongoing, but wet roads from the Friday morning rain are believed to be a factor.
The impact caused a crack in the bridge overpass, but state inspectors said the bridge suffered no structural damage.
