LARUE COUNTY, KY (WAVE) – The suspect in Friday night's shooting involving a LaRue County sheriff's deputy has died.
According to Kentucky State Police, the officer was in pursuit of a reckless driver along KY 1192 about 9:24 p.m. Friday. The chase went on for about ten miles before police say the suspect's car spun out near Magnolia and came to rest facing the deputy.
As the deputy approached the vehicle, the suspect accelerated toward him, investigators said. The deputy fired shots into the vehicle, striking the suspect in the head. At that point, the vehicle left the roadway and went into a ditch. The deputy was not injured.
LaRue County EMS transported the suspect to Hardin Memorial Hospital. He was later transported to University Hospital in Louisville where he died early Saturday morning. An autopsy was planned.
The names of the suspect and the deputy involved have not yet been released.
The deputy's cruiser was equipped with a camera and the video was logged into evidence.
State Police said alcohol was located in the suspect's vehicle and appeared to be a factor in the suspect's reckless driving.
