LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Work to
revitalize Sheppard Square officially started on Monday in Louisville's
Smoketown neighborhood.
Congressman John Yarmuth, Louisville Mayor
Greg Fischer and Metro Council members were on hand to celebrate the beginning
of the $101 million revitalization project.
Construction is starting on "Block B,"
which is bound by Hancock, Jacob, Finzer and Jackson Streets.
"There was so much passion for making
sure that the people in this part of town, that we could do something to
improve their lives and create an environment in which they were safe, their
families were secure and they could pursue their dreams," said Yarmuth. "Sheppard
Square, the revitalization, the Hope VI project will help them do that."
The revitalization of
Sheppard Square is part of Louisville's third Hope XI project along with Park
DuValle and Liberty Green. The plan, which includes federal funding, calls for
454 new homes including a mix of single family homes, townhouses and apartment
buildings is expected to be completed by 2015.
