Man accused of torturing cats accepts plea deal

SHEPHERDSVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A Bullitt County man took a plea deal on animal abuse charges Tuesday.

Alex Phelps pleaded guilty to eight counts of torture of cats that resulted in physical injury or death. In exchange, Phelps will serve five years in prison for each count. The sentences will run concurrently, so Phelps will spend a maximum of five years behind bars.

Because of the time Phelps has served already, he is eligible for parole immediately, but prosecutors say they plan to fight any attempt to get Phelps released on parole.

Phelps remains out on bond. Formal sentencing is scheduled for January 11 in Bullitt Circuit Court.
