SHIVELY, KY (WAVE) – One man is dead another is in jail charged with shooting him multiple times in the torso and head outside a strip club.
According to Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Jack Arnold, Terrance Smith, 37, from New Albany, was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head.
Shively Police said Tony Whitfield, 29, was still at Doll House Gentlemen's club on South 7th Street when they responded to the shooting around 2 a.m. Thursday. He was booked at Louisville Metro Corrections on one count of murder.
"There was some type of altercation that took place inside the establishment. It was just a physical altercation at that point, no weapons involved," said Shively Police Sergeant Josh Myers. "All the parties involved were escorted out by the security of the establishment. Once they got into the parking lot the altercation either started again or escalated at that point to the point where shots were fired."
Whitfield's brother said the shooting was self-defense. He said Smith threatened to kill Whitfield during the fight inside, adding his brother has a carry-conceal license and would only fire his gun to defend himself.
Sgt. Myers said they only recovered one gun and believe it was the murder weapon. "We're looking at all angles. I don't want to comment on whether or not he possessed any type of license at this point, but it's certainly something we're taking into consideration."
The business also had surveillance video that Sgt. Myers said they are also reviewing.
