LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The coroner had identified the man who was fatally shot on Christmas Eve in the Shawnee neighborhood as 20-year-old Dante Newsome.
Police arrived in the 4000 block of West Market Street around 1:32 p.m. Police say Newsome was shot on the porch of a house and was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Two of his friends ran inside the house and said they shot him down like a dog," said Sherri Jackson, Newsome's mother.
Jackson says her son was visiting a friend when he was shot and believes someone drove up to the house, got out, and tried to rob her son.
"The money is still in his pocket," said Jackson. "They might have got some of it but, why shoot him? A day before Christmas that was stupid."
Sherri says her son was a 2010 graduate of Shawnee High School. She says her son was a straight A student.
WAVE 3 spoke with the victim's uncle who explained hearing his 20-year-old nephew lost his life on Christmas Eve was a surreal feeling, "There's nothing I could do or say or any message I could convey that could be more surreal that walking up and knowing a loved one, someone you know, that you hoped and you prayed for and you looked at with such hope, you know. Just to know they are no longer here."
Louisville Metro police are looking for suspects in this case. If you have any information you are asked to call the anonymous tip line at (502) 574-LMPD.
