INDIANAPOLIS, IN (WAVE) – More than 100 Indiana National
Guard Soldiers and Airmen were activated Wednesday in response to a winter
storm that blanketed a large section of the state with snow and ice.
The National Guard personnel will assist the citizens and
communities of Indiana, Indiana State Police and local authorities under the
direction of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS).
Forty of them will assist emergency personnel with the
evacuation of stranded drivers and shut-ins. Another two dozen of them will
provide life support and vehicle staging operations to emergency personnel
during IDHS operations.
The Indiana National Guard will assist civil authorities
in order to prevent loss of life and damage to property and infrastructure
during the winter storm.
Guardsmen are operating in Terre Haute, Vincennes,
Evansville, Indianapolis, Muncie and Richmond, IN. Troops are also standing by
to provide support in New Albany if needed.
