NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) – The New Albany Police
Department will hold a gun buyback on Friday, December 28 but only certain
people can participate and only certain guns will be accepted.
The program is open to people who can verify
that they are New Albany residents using an identification card or operator's
license issued in Indiana with a New Albany address listed. Other forms of
acceptable identification include a photo ID issued by an employer and a
current utility bill in the person's name with a New Albany address printed on
it.
Only operational, modern firearms (handguns,
rifles and shotguns) will be accepted for surrender. There is no limit on the
number of firearms that can be turned in. No muzzleloaders or black powder-type
firearms, air guns, etc. will be accepted.
People wishing to participate should unload
the firearms before turning them in and avoid walking along city streets with
the firearms they plan to surrender.
The buyback program will be held between noon
and 8 p.m. Friday at the Ekin Avenue Recreation Center at 1721 Ekin Avenue in
New Albany.
The gun buyback is a joint project of Mayor
Jeff Gahan's administration and New Albany Police.
