Grant may make hand transplants mainstream

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Kentucky's largest health system will be getting a big upgrade.

Thursday, Jewish Hospital and Saint Mary's Healthcare, now called KentuckyOne, announced an $18 million grant for facility upgrades and advanced clinical research.

The money will help Kosair Children's Hospital to become even more kid friendly and will allow researchers at Jewish Hospital to continue experimental hand transplants.

KentuckyOne hopes the money will bring hand transplantation out of the experimental phase and into mainstream medicine.

The largest single project is a $5 million investment to create a hybrid operating room and resuscitation center at Jewish Hospital.
