LOUISVILLE, KY. - University of Louisville junior guard Russ Smith was named the Big East Conference Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 24-30.
In the Cardinals' only game of the holiday week, Smith totaled 21 points, three steals, three assists and matched a career-high with seven rebounds as Louisville beat intrastate rival No. 23 Kentucky 80-77. Smith, who ranks third in the Big East in scoring (19.8 ppg), scored 17 of his points in the second half and produced his eighth game with at least three steals.
It was the sixth game with 20 or more points this season for Smith, who is among the national leaders in steals (2.8 per game). He has been named to the Big East Honor Roll twice this season.
Smith and the Cardinals (12-1), who have won seven straight games, play their first Big East Conference game of the season when they face Providence in the KFC Yum! Center on Wednesday.
