IMPACT: The Weather of 2012 is a special one hour presentation by the WAVE 3 Storm Tracking Team.

The year was filled with extremes from the worst tornado outbreak since 1974 to record heat and extreme drought.

Tornadoes tear through Kentuckiana

Chelsea mother works to move on after grandparents, son killed in tornado

  • Christie Dutton catches up with Amanda Jackson who survived the March 2 storm, however she lost more than most in Chelsea, IN, including her grandparents & son.

Videos capture devastation of tornadoes

  • Kevin Harned visits Lenora Hunter who lost her husband, Wayne, in the Henryville tornado on March 2
  • Home video shows the tornado approaching the Hunter's home, hitting the high school and tossing the school bus
  • Next hit, Milton, Kentucky's Fire & Rescue, now back better than before
  • 22 lives were lost in Kentucky on March 2, hardest hit in the Commonwealth was West Liberty
  • The season's largest snow fell on March 5, just days after the devastation of March 2
  • Louisville's warmest March on record
  • Two local teens struck by lightning  
  • March 23 tornado in SE Jefferson Co., KY near Fern Creek. 110 MPH winds damaged a half dozen homes

Hail storm drowns out sounds of hooves

  • Brian Goode reports from the world's most legendary racetrack, Churchill Downs, where baseball size hail hit on opening night, causing $175 million in damage
  • Oaks Day was hot and lightning drove horse racing fans indoors just before the run for the lilies.

Drought causes problems for farmers

  • Strong storms hit Louisville in July with winds of 95 MPH, ripping off the roof of the Crown Plaza Hotel, near the airport
  • A stretch of triple digit heat moved in with over 10 days at or above 100 degrees
  • Lauren Jones examines the drought of 2012, Louisville's 9th direst summer on record and what that means for farmers and consumers
  • Active Hurricane season – 19 named storms
  • Isaac brought high storm surge & heavy rain for days to Louisiana, delaying the Republican National Convention in Tampa
  • Sandy moved ashore in late October with hurricane force winds hitting New York City.  Millions left in the dark, NY Stock Exchange closed for two days, subways and airports closed and the NY Marathon was canceled
  • Nor'Easter adds insult to injury to the Northeast as the first snow of the season blankets the area crippled by Hurricane Sandy
