Hospitals placing visitor restrictions as flu deaths rise

Posted: Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS (WAVE) - Hospitals across Indiana are tightening visitor restrictions in hopes of preventing the spread of flu.

As of Wednesday, Indiana State health officials reported 27 deaths due to flu-related illness.

Twenty-four of the deaths reported were people over the age of 65.

During the 2011/12 flu season Indiana had no flu-related deaths. The State reported three deaths in the 2010/11 flu season.

Last week, the health department reported 403 emergency department visits countywide for flu-like illnesses, a 69 percent increase from the previous week.
