LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Theft is just the tip of the iceberg
as to what a Louisville man is facing after a trip to WalMart Monday night as
the bitter
weather blew into Kentuckiana.
"It is very cold out here it is cutting
through my jacket right now and I can't ride up enough even to make it feel
warm right now," Rodney Beason said Monday night while describing the
below-freezing temperatures.
While Kentuckiana tried to avoid the arctic
blast, police say one man put his two children right in harm's way.
In court Tuesday morning, Robert Collins
answered to charges about what detectives say he did inside the Standiford
Plaza WalMart.
"The loss prevention officer actually
witnessed Mr. Collins as he was walking out the door with three HD TV's in his
cart," said LMPD Spokeswoman Alicia Smiley.
Those TVs were valued at more than $1,000 but
police say the more serious crime comes when officers tracked him down at his
car.
"Mr. Collins had left his two children in his
vehicle while he had gone into WalMart to shoplift. Those children were two
boys, ages 5 and 2 and a half," Smiley said.
Two kids, left alone in a cold car, while
their father went in to shoplift: Collins responded to that claim in
court Tuesday.
"The car was warm, I was only in there for
five minutes," Collins said while in court Tuesday morning.
But the judge saw it much differently and
didn't mince words, "Two and five is just too damn young to leave
kids in a parking lot in today's society."
Collins stated he had a full time job during
the court proceedings. His bond was set at $2,500. He is due back in court on
February 1 and has been ordered to have no contact with his children until
further notice.
No one responded when a WAVE 3 crew stopped
by Collins's home; however a neighbor who didn't wish to be identified said
she's been worried about the kids for awhile.
