CLARKSVILLE, IN (WAVE) - A school resource officer will soon patrol Clarksville Community Schools.
Superintendent of Clarksville Community Schools Kimberly Knott said they have never had a school resource officer before, but they are ready. "Given the recent tragedy at Newtown," she says, "It clearly has brought heightened awareness to the need."
Officer Mike Popplewell, a full-time officer, was chosen for the job. Popplewell is a graduate of Clarksville High School. Knott believes he is perfect fit for the job, "He's a life-long resident of Clarksville, he knows many of the families."
Bringing a school resource officer to the district was a joint effort involving the town of Clarksville, the Clarksville Community School District and the Clarksville Police Department.
The deal was finalized at a special Tuesday night board meeting. The officer will start serving in his new position by the end of this week.
