LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The Pegasus in flight in the night sky is the subject of this year's official Kentucky Derby Festival poster.
Local artist Lonnie Walker, an award-winning illustrator and graphic artist, designed the 2013 poster. It was unveiled Wednesday night and features vibrant colors in a starry night sky showcasing the festival's symbolic winged horse.
The poster was released in a two-part series: the limited edition is the larger of the two and features an embossed Pegasus. It is signed and numbered and retails for $75. The official edition sells for $30. The posters currently are available at Bluegrass Frames and online at www.kdf.org.
This is Walker's second KDF poster. He also created the festival's official poster image in 2000.
The Kentucky Derby Festival's official merchandise line also was unveiled Wednesday night. It includes more than 100 pieces from t-shirts and caps to mugs and ties. The merchandise was produced by All-Pro Championships. Official Derby Festival merchandise is available at Kroger, Walmart and Meijer stores, Taste of Kentucky locations and online at www.kdf.org.
The Kentucky Derby Festival's official poster series has become a unique symbol of the community. Past designs are showcased in offices and homes throughout the city. Peter Max's expressionistic Bluegrass Pegasus launched the series in 1981, and a stylistic and geographical mix of artists has been showcased over the years.
The signed collector editions continue to significantly increase in value, and the quality of the poster series has been recognized worldwide.
