Foul play not suspected after body found on river banks

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – No foul play is suspected in the death of a woman whose body washed ashore Friday morning. She was found along the banks of the Ohio in New Albany around 10:30 a.m.

A tow boat captain leaving the McAlpine Dam, heading south spotted her from the river. She was about a mile from the New Albany Boat Ramp behind QRS recycling.

New Albany Police, Fire, Indiana State Police and the Floyd County Coroner were on scene for several hours Friday investigating. Coroner Dr. Lesli Knable says the woman did not have an ID on her. She is white, between the ages of 45 and 60. She was partially clothed when police got to her. Because of the cold temperatures, Dr. Knable cannot say how long she's been dead.

Dr. Knable said this is the fifth or sixth body that has come ashore in this area of the river in the last 12 months, but finding them in the winter is unusual.

The woman's body was taken for autopsy. The coroner hopes some jewelry she had on her will help get an ID. The autopsy should also help confirm what happened.
