TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A stretch of Sylvania Avenue is being eyed for street-scape improvements.

Councilman Tom Waniewski is trying to secure funding to beautify the part of Sylvania between Secor and Douglas roads.

"There's so many local businesses along this 1-mile stretch," Waniewski said. "So what can we do to enhance this corridor? Certain façade improvements is what I'm pitching with the businesses."

One local business owner, Dorothy Bryan, said she appreciates the outdoor flower planter the city put in front of her Cake Arts Supply store, and she hopes the city can do more to improve the business environment.

"More lights making it brighter," Bryan said. "Especially when the store's open later, just making it more pretty."

Waniewski said he has already secured $50,000 for the project, and wants the city to earmark an additional $50,000 from this year's capital improvements budget. He believes the city needs to make this investment in order to keep private investment in the area.

"It sometimes takes more to bring back a business than to retain it, in terms of dollars," he said. "I just want to make sure we have resources to enhance what's going on here."

Some improvements he mentioned included decorative street lights, benches, and brick pathways.

For the past few years, officer involved shootings have led to unprecedented protests. Backlash and violence at times have been so severe, some police said it made them hesitate or even avoid some actions on the job. It's called the Ferguson effect - a reference to the Missouri town where an officer shot Michael Brown in 2014.
