Top occupational ads were for truck drivers.
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Recent
employment advertisements show a growth of nearly 2,000 job ads since last
year.
More
than 13,700 local job openings were posted in one month, according to a December
snapshot of Toledo area online job postings.
"The
number is a little surprising as high as it is with as many people out of work
as there are," said Mike Veh, workforce development coordinator at The Source.
Employers
say they are looking for highly-skilled workers. The top ads were for truck
drivers, which is also one of the top training programs at The Source.
"The
challenge in truck driving is you have to be willing to go over the road at
least for the first year," Veh said. "You're going to be away from home a lot.
A lot of folks could do the job and are interested…but they don't want to be
away from their families that much."
Commercial
drivers' licenses were the second most in-demand certification after registered
nurses.
Leading
employers are Blanchard Valley Health System and HRC Manorcare. Promedica took
the top spot, with 508 jobs posted. Veh said healthcare jobs are in demand, but
hard to fill.
"Mainly
because it's time-consuming and difficult to get the skills necessary for those
jobs," he explained.
The
Source helps job-seekers with resume tips and interviewing skills.
"We've
seen a lot more jobs coming through the door," Veh said. "I think it's a sign
of things improving and they're going to get better as the year goes on."
